JOB PURPOSE

The role of the Science & Technology team is to deliver breakthrough technologies and differentiated innovations to meet the needs and preferences of our consumers around the world. Within the Personal Care division, we are building new, world-class capability to help us develop innovations that out-perform the competition and build equity for our leading brands.

An opportunity has arisen for a degree/MSc qualified formulation technologist to join the Science & Technology (S&T) Physical Sciences Group within the Personal Care business at Port Sunlight and the Materials Innovation Factory (Liverpool), to contribute to the on-going development and optimisation of product formulations for Personal Care (Deo and Oral Care). The role involves working in multi-disciplinary Physical Sciences teams where everyone contributes to achieving a common goal. It is ideally suited to an energetic, self-motivated, independent, and resourceful research scientist with excellent people skills and a desire to further develop their scientific skills.

Reporting into a Physical Science manager, the job-holder will use their technical expertise to prepare and characterise new product formulations. They will measure and optimize product performance using category specific techniques, and also develop new methods to characterise products, working with robotics/automation experts when required. The job-holder will capture high quality data via appropriate data capture tools to provide new product insights.

Key skill areas are in formulation, colloid science, and physical characterisation of product microstructures. The successful candidate will also be expected to have proficiency in data handling and statistics.

About the company

Unilever

Company overview
Unilever is a global consumer goods company selling products across Beauty & Wellbeing, Personal Care, Home Care, Foods, and Ice Cream. Unilever’s brands are sold in 190+ countries and the company says 3.4 billion people use Unilever products every day. Unilever employs about 128,000 people globally and operates at large scale across both commercial teams and manufacturing and supply chain networks. Unilever is a public company headquartered in London.

Locations and presence

Unilever operates globally, with employees spread across around 100 countries and roles advertised through regional hubs and local offices depending on function. Unilever promotes flexible ways of working in corporate materials, but the day-to-day setup is still role- and team-dependent rather than one universal remote rule.

Palpable Score

75.4
/ 100
Unilever is a high-confidence early-career employer because Unilever runs recurring internships, apprenticeships, and graduate programmes (UFLP) with published application windows and defined assessment stages. The main drag on the score is outcomes certainty: public feedback on progression is mixed, and recent restructuring headlines add risk for anyone who wants a predictable first 18–24 months.
