About the Role

Design Engineering EPR-E Graduate Programme

Ready to kickstart your career in design engineering and help Britain achieve net zero? At EDF, Success is Personal. Here, you’ll learn from experts, develop key skills, and launch your unique career within a business that’s leading the UK’s energy transformation.

“I've found the EDF DEG graduate programme such an amazing opportunity. I never thought that I would have the opportunity to work abroad and be given the chance to learn a new language. Everyone has been supportive and helpful through my journey and I am now on my way to becoming a chartered engineer.” – Caleb, Design Engineer

The Opportunity

Alongside earning a salary of £37,500 per annum, you’ll gain hands-on experience across our nuclear new build programme. Over the course of this 18-month scheme, you’ll work on Software and Hardware-based Reactor Protection Systems, Plant Computing Systems, Process Automation and Control Systems, piping and equipment design, and more.

You’ll be part of the EPRE site integrated team at Hinkley Point C or the design teams supporting HPC and SZC replication. There may also be an opportunity to spend part of your programme in France, embedded within Edvance or Framatome, learning about the systems that power the station. This is your chance to help transform Hinkley Point C from a complex construction project into a fully operational nuclear power station.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Design Engineering Graduate at EDF, you’ll gain hands-on experience, develop technical and professional skills, and contribute to meaningful projects that support the UK’s journey to net zero.

Your Work Location

Following an induction at Cannington Court in #Somerset, you’ll be based in the Southwest, spending time at our design office in #Bristol and on-site at #HinkleyPointC. A limited number of graduates may also have the opportunity to work in #France with Edvance or Framatome.

Who You Are

To be eligible for this EDF graduate programme, you need to have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, a 2:2 or higher in a Bachelor’s or Postgraduate Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, Maths or Physics. If selected for the France placement, you’ll need to be open to relocating and keen to learn the French language.

Security Vetting

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

Alongside a starting salary of at least £37,500 per annum, potential for an annual bonus, and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days, and more.

At EDF, we believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we offer you the freedom to develop a career that’s unique to you. Here, Success is Personal – it’s your journey, powered by us.

Everyone is welcome at EDF; we’re committed to building a workforce that reflects gender balance, social mobility, and inclusion of minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, and those with disabilities. As a Disability Confident employer, we will support applicants requiring adjustments.

We anticipate significant interest in this graduate scheme – so please don’t delay, apply today!

About the company

EDF

Company overview
EDF Energy supplies electricity and gas to homes and businesses in the UK and positions the business around “An Electric Britain” to improve affordability and sustainability. EDF Energy also operates and builds low-carbon generation, including wind, solar, and nuclear, with major nuclear projects linked to Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. EDF’s 2025 progress update describes EDF as one of the UK’s largest energy service providers, supplying 3.7 million homes and businesses. EDF also offers services that support electrification, such as smart metering and solutions for heating and electric mobility.

Locations and presence

EDF Energy operates across the UK and Ireland, with roles spanning corporate offices (for example London, Bristol, Gloucester, Exeter, and Hove) and major operational sites such as nuclear power stations and new-build locations. Work setup varies by programme, with many industrial placements based on-site, and several graduate roles describing hybrid or flexible working while also noting that some locations expect 3–5 days per week in-office.

Palpable Score

79.7
/ 100
EDF Energy offers broad early-career access across apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and industrial placements, with unusually clear programme structure and support named in public materials. Hiring transparency is better than average thanks to published stages, key dates, and strengths-based assessment framing, although candidate-reported experiences still vary. The main limit is outcomes reporting, because public materials do not give consistent conversion, promotion-timeline, or retention metrics for early-career cohorts.
