A reconfigurable (typically AC) battery differs from a regular (typically DC) battery with respect to the flexibility of the power wiring: in a reconfigurable battery the (groups of) battery cells can be switched in or out of the battery cell(s) network realizing a certain output voltage.
The electrification group of System Innovations Automotive targets development of an AC battery prototype that can generate a safe AC voltage level (typically less than 50 V AC). Such an AC battery can be realized based on a DC battery of an eBike. Various resources exist providing details regarding the configuration and teardown of an eBike 48V or 36 V battery pack. The French company Gouach provides a battery pack that is to be assembled by the owner and in which cells are not welded (connected) together. The purpose is to perform on the bench comparison experiments between the DC battery + inverter and the prototype AC battery that is developed in this project. The assignment concerns development of a low-voltage AC battery that is derived from/based on an existing (DC) eBike 48V battery. The development work primarily involves designing a switching network and implementing the control system required to generate an AC output at the desired frequency.

This is a full-time internship (40 hours per week) with a duration of 6 months or longer. The assignment could also be suitable as a thesis/graduation project. Please note that to be considered for an internship/working student assignment, you need to be registered as a student during the entire period. This project will be carried out on-site at NXP Semiconductors on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, due to the required high-intensity knowledge transfer and supervision, as well as the availability of specific hardware and software tools. Working in this project implies working in a stimulating, multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of technology, with knowledgeable colleagues, and an excellent infrastructure.
