About our Engineering Teams:

‍

We have over 400 engineers across Monzo who design and build our in-house banking platform. We have big ambitions for the future, and technology plays a big role in creating a bank our customers want, so engineers at Monzo collaborate across disciplines to solve interesting challenges throughout the company.

‍

These range from the products our customers use everyday to underlying infrastructure, security, payments and finance, customer operations, financial crime, and data, to name just a few areas. As a bank, there is scope for impact across a huge number of opportunities.

‍

We contribute to open source software as much as possible. Our blog is a good place to learn even more about what we do!

‍

Your day-to-day

‍

This role is all about collaborating with your team to make a difference to your customers. As a backend engineer you’ll work in a squad alongside other disciplines like product managers, marketers, user researchers, designers, mobile engineers, web engineers, data analysts, business analysts, writers and more!

‍

Together you’ll build and support a particular part of Monzo. Our squads belong to our wider collectives (a word we use to describe self-governing business units of ~100 people). They are; Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, Security & Expansion.

‍

They’re all looking for additional Backend Engineers right now, we do a standard interview process across all our collectives and at the end we will find the best match for you based on your skills, experience, preferences and aligning with the business need!

‍

Our backend engineers have a variety of different backgrounds. As long as you enjoy learning new things, we’d love to talk to you. We do not ask for formal qualifications or degree requirements for any of our engineering roles.

About the company

Monzo

Company overview
Monzo is a UK digital bank offering personal and business current accounts, savings, credit cards, loans, and subscriptions through a mobile-first product. The company makes money through interest income, interchange, and subscription revenue, alongside other product lines tied to banking. Monzo also runs large regulated operations behind the scenes, including fraud and financial crime controls, customer support, and card and payments infrastructure. Monzo publishes annual reports that highlight continued growth in customers, revenue, and product breadth.

Locations and presence

Monzo’s main UK presence includes a London office, with a large operations footprint tied to remote work and a Cardiff office, and Monzo describes the company as primarily distributed. Monzo also runs a US hiring presence with roles based in San Francisco or New York City on a hybrid basis.

Palpable Score

67.8
/ 100
Monzo is a solid early-career pick for people who want a direct “real job” route into a scaling fintech, because Monzo hires interns and runs entry routes through Customer Operations with paid training and clear role descriptions. Monzo also publishes unusually detailed interview process write-ups for technical roles and shows pay transparency in several entry-level and intern postings. The score is held back by limited public early-career outcomes reporting, especially on conversion rates, promotion timelines, and cohort retention.
